They are very similar (except for color) to
the shepherds of Belgium and early German
shepherd varieties.  They, like their Belgian
cousins, are judged on the same physical
standard.  They have been known in their
present form since the early 1700s, when
examples of the breeds were exported to
Australia.
"K9 Rory"
The Dutch Shepherd first came to the
fore in Holland around 1870 from the
north Brabant area.  The dogs
demonstrated superb herding abilities
and were widespread at that time, but,
as the flocks dwindled, so did the dogs.
Like other herding breeds, they lost
more ground when the German
Shepherd craze swept the world.

The Dutch Shepherds have been
rediscovered and are quickly  regaining
popularity. Modern owners, proud of
this breed's national heritage, are
dedicated to retaining working qualities.

The coat variations include Long, rough
and short and various shades of
brindle, including gray, yellow, silver,
red or gold brindles; blue; color tends to
lighten with age.
